Hello blistering heat

July and August like weather has hit Crofton, MD…and it’s only the first week of June. Today it’s already 95 and tomorrow is scheduled to be even hotter.

Air conditioners are buzzing, and plants are drooping.

If you have to be out in this weather, please be sure to take precautions. Keep hydrated, and make sure exercise is kept to a minimum. I know how inviting it is to exercise on Crofton Parkway because I live there. Today, however, it might be more prudent to wait until the sun goes down.

Bridge and Tunnel tolls very likely to rise soon

The 60 day public comment period on the proposed Toll Rate Increases for Maryland bridges and tunnels has begun, and will continue until August 1, 2011. The public can submit their comments directly on line here.

This isn’t just an inflation level increase that the Maryland Department of Transportation is recommending, here are the new proposed rates that in all likelihood will take effect later this year:

  • Key Bridge from $2 to $3
  • Harbor and Ft. McHenry Tunnel fro $2 to $3
  • Kennedy Highway and Hatem Bridge from $5 to $6
  • Nice Bridge from $3 to $5
  • Bay Bridge from $2.50 to $5

The rates would increase once again in 2013. Some discounts may apply for EZPass users.

While I do understand the need for periodic rate increases, I feel sorry for the commuters who have to use these bridges and tunnels for their daily commute. The occasional visitor to the Eastern Shore will just suck it up, but if you’re commuting every day, that’s going to hurt.

Fish…and win prizes in Maryland waters

If you like fishing, and you like money, this could be the summer to make both of your dreams come true. For the seventh year in a row, Maryland has launched their annual fishing challenge.

Quietly, over the weekend, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources caught and tagged 200 rockfish, in Maryland fishing waters. There will be additional tagged rockfish release in July and August, as the contest continues.

The tagged fish include one “Diamond Jim,” and 199 impostors. If you catch June’s Diamond Jim, that fish is worth $10,000. The impostors are worth $500 each. June’s Diamond Jim magically turns into an impostor if he’s not caught by the end of the month, giving way to a new July’s Diamond Jim.

Don’t remove the Chartreuse tag if you catch Diamond Jim, or one of his impostors. Just call the number on the tag and a Maryland State employee will verify your win…and the amount.

For a good deal more information on this contest and additional citations you can win, visit the “Diamond Jim” website.

Annapolis, MD – 2011 Memorial Day Parade

Like a lot of residents in this area, I love a parade. Today, I went to the Memorial Day Parade in Annapolis. I got there in time to get a great seat at the intersection of West Street and Church Circle.

The parade came down West St. and turned onto Church Circle, before heading down Main St. to the City Dock. Weather was wonderful in the morning, and a lot of Annapolis area folks came out to support our veterans.

Veterans, bands, groups, and firetrucks all participated for a fantastic event. If you haven’t been to the Memorial Day Parade in Annapolis yet, make sure you go next year. It’s fun, it’s free, and it’s fantastic.
