Trash pickup schedule for Anne Arundel County residents to change in June, 2012

The era of two times a week trash collection is coming to an end in Anne Arundel County, MD. Beginning in June, 2012, trash pick-up will be reduced to one day a week. The day where trash and recycling will remain, and the day where trash only was picked up, will be eliminated.

Besides the savings, which is anticipated to be returned to taxpayers, the County also anticipates that recycling will also increase. It seems that many recycled items are thrown in the regular trash, on the trash only day. The County Executive expects that the current recycling rate of 40% will increase with the changes being made in the pick-up cycle.

The slight decrease in convenience for some County residents should be more than offset by the increase in efficiency and recycling.

23rd Annual Anne Arundel County, MD, Spelling Bee

Twenty seven students from public and private schools, including one home school student, will compete this Saturday in the 23^rd annual Anne Arundel County, MD, Spelling Bee. The winner gets the honor of representing the County at the National Scripps Spelling Bee, in June, 2011.

Crofton will be represented in the County Spelling Bee by Emily Durell, an eighth grader at Crofton Middle School.

The Spelling Bee will be broadcast on AACPS-TV, at 10 AM, Saturday, February 26^th, 2011. County cable residents can find the broadcast on Comcast channel 96, and Verizon channel 36.

Best wishes to all the participants. It is a huge accomplishment to get this far, and you should all be commended for your hard work and studies.

Anne Arundel County Schools Looking To Waive 5 Snow Days

As you know, students in Maryland are required to attend school for 181 days per school year. Enter 2009 and 2010, where students have had 10 days off for snow…already, and it’s still February. What recourse do the schools have? Well, they can apply to the State for a waiver, and Anne Arundel County Schools superintendent has done just that.

There are no guarantees, but the State can grant a waiver of up to 5 days, thus, reducing the school year to just 176 days, instead of the required 181.

If the State doesn’t grant the waiver, I can’t begin to imagine what a mess its going to be for parents and students at the end of the school year.

Recycle your Christmas Tree

I hate to be the spoilsport but we all know those Christmas Trees don’t last forever. Heck, most of them were cut down long before Christmas and by now they’re pretty well drying out. Maybe another week left in them but that’s about all.

What do you do to get rid of the once live Christmas Tree? If you’re living in Anne Arundel County Maryland, its pretty easy to recycle. After you un-decorate the tree, all you need to do is to put it out with the other recycling. If its too big (over four feet) you should cut it in half so the recyclers can get it in the truck. Recycled Christmas Trees are made into mulch by the county.

While you’re at it, a lot of other Christmas waste can be recycled as well. Wrapping paper, catalogues, cardboard boxes, etc.

Anne Arundel County Not Immune To Unemployment

The Maryland Department of Labor has released unemployment information for Anne Arundel County, MD, and it’s going in the wrong direction. Considering the employment market in Washington, DC, Baltimore and Annapolis, Anne Arundel County has generally performed well.

March 2009 has shown an increase from last year of almost 100%. Here are the recent stats:

2004 – 3.9%
2005 – 3.8%
2006 – 3.0%
2007 – 2.9%
2008 – 3.2%
2009 – 6.3%

Unemployment has hit Anne Arundel County, and while we are still better than the national average, it will have an effect on the real estate market.

Anne Arundel County Perc’ing Again

I know the recent rains probably caused havoc with some personal outdoor activities but it brought a little relief to the county as well.

Anne Arundel County has restarted the 2009 wet season perc tests again. Testing will be done on a first come, first served basis.

More rain scheduled for this week will probably keep the testing going.
